Nerve conduction studies

Nerve conduction studies help to identify problems leading to the poor passage of electrical signals along the nerves that activate the skeletal muscles. Several electrodes are placed over the muscles and along the nerve pathway. Your provider will stimulate the nerve, which will cause the muscle to twitch. The time it takes for the muscle to twitch can be measured to see if the nerve is functioning properly. Reasons to have nerve studies include muscle weakness or abnormal sensations in limbs such as tingling or numbness. It is often combined with an electromyogram to check for diseases of the muscles.
