Peripheral nerve blocking is performed by injecting anti-inflammatory or anesthetic medications into a group of nerves. The idea is to block the pain signals coming from specific areas of the body. These injections can also be used to identify the source of pain to determine further treatment options. As an outpatient procedure, these injections can help with chronic pain such as sciatica pain or chronic pelvic pain. Peripheral nerve blocking is aided by ultrasound and if required, some sedative anesthesia can be provided during the procedure. Occasionally, the doctor will use a pump that slowly infuses the medication to have long-lasting pain relief.
