PRK laser surgery
PRK surgery is a procedure done on the cornea to correct vision loss. This type of laser surgery is the predecessor to LASIK surgery. Only for very specific reasons will your ophthalmologist recommend having PRK surgery instead of LASIK surgery. PRK surgery requires the cornea to be prepared before the surgery. This cornea preparation consists of gently brushing it off to allow the laser to work. This is an outpatient procedure that does not require general anesthesia, but only eye drops for local anesthesia. Your eyes are temporarily fixed to prevent you from blinking. A flap is cut in the cornea, then the cornea is reshaped using a laser before the flap is put back again. PRK recovery is longer than recovery from LASIK surgery because the cornea needs a longer time to heal.
