Radiofrequency ablation, in-office

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that destroys targeted tissue by using heat. It is sometimes used in the treatment of certain cancers, the management of heart arrhythmias, varicose veins, or the relief of chronic back/neck pain. RFA for heart arrhythmias is also referred to as catheter ablation where the heart is reached via venous access; this is performed in a special laboratory under sedation, sterile conditions, and continuous monitorization. RFA for tumors is MRI-guided and usually performed in a hospital setting. Lastly, RFA for the management of neck or back pain is also referred to as radiofrequency neurotomy (RFA). It is often performed guided by live x-ray and helps to treat pain caused by spine osteoarthritis or spinal trauma. RFA for the treatment of varicose veins, referred to as Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation, is performed by introducing a catheter through the varicose vein and closing the blood flow by shrinking the vein.
