Skin biopsy

The type of skin biopsy you need will depend on the doctor's evaluation of the suspected lesion. A punch biopsy is performed with circular instruments that remove the underlying subcutaneous tissue; other biopsy types are preferred when melanoma is suspected or if there are deep skin lesions. A shave biopsy is recommended for superficial lesions when melanoma is not suspected. A skin biopsy can be performed at a doctor's office with local anesthesia.
