An ultrasound (US) or sonography is an imaging modality that uses high-frequency ultrasonic waves to look inside the body (noninvasively) by placing a transducer over the area of interest. This is a good visualization method for looking at superficial soft tissue. It is also used in combination with minimally invasive procedures to localize a target area. A submodality is Duplex ultrasound, which measures the speed of blood flow. This test is frequently used for the diagnosis of heart diseases and disorders of the veins and arteries. Ultrasounds can be performed in almost every part of the body. The type of US will depend on the specific clinical need.
