Neonatal spine ultrasound
An ultrasound (US) or sonography uses high-frequency ultrasonic waves to look inside the body. A neonatal spine ultrasound is performed in the office by the placement of a probe over the baby's spine. Your doctor will be able to view and interpret the images while the test is being performed. This type of ultrasound in newborns is usually performed when neural tube defects are suspected due to the presence of anomalies such as hair tufts, pigmented spine spots, or vascular abnormalities in the skin (hemangiomas).
