Pneumococcal vaccine

Currently, there are two approved pneumococcal vaccines available in the US: the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. In general, pneumococcal vaccination is recommended yearly for adults over 65 years old and young adults between 18 and 64 years old with a history of spleen removal or certain medical conditions. The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is recommended in children (2-18 years old) with certain medical conditions. The doctor can tell you which type of vaccine you need, based on your risk factors and immunization history.
