Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is an obstetric test that is performed in the second or third trimester for a variety of reasons. It uses ultrasound guidance and a thin needle to obtain a sample of amniotic fluid to assess the fetus for amniotic fluid infections or chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down Syndrome. In the third trimester, amniocentesis is performed to assess the maturity of the fetal lungs.
