Cardioversion

Cardioversion is a procedure that aims to reestablish normal electrical function within the heart. It is needed when a person has an abnormal cardiac rhythm such as atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation. Symptoms that indicate you may need cardioversion may feel like a pounding or fluttering sensation in your chest associated with chest discomfort or shortness of breath. Cardioversion can be performed either by medical means (injecting drugs to restore a normal heart rhythm) or by using electricity. It is important not to drink, eat, or chew anything 12 hours before the procedure.
