Dental crowns (porcelain or ceramic)

Dental crowns are an alternative to dental fillings. Crowns consist of a tooth-shaped cap placed over the damaged tooth. Dental crowns can be placed for cosmetic reasons, to restore a tooth shape, protect weak teeth, cover a dental implant, or allow the placement of dental bridges. During the first visit, you will discuss your specific needs and your dentist will make recommendations about the crown materials that best meet your needs. Some dentists perform this in a multi-day procedure and others in a same-day procedure. Before the crown implant, some preparation such as imaging and impressions of your teeth are performed. If it's a multi-day procedure, temporary crowns are placed while your definitive crowns are being made in a lab. Some dentists make the crowns in the office, which allows for a single-day procedure. The process of implanting the crown and fixing it with cement is performed under local anesthesia.
